French Angelfish (Pomacanthus paru) (Bloch, 1787)

 

Synonyms:Pomacanthus aureus, Chaetodon paru, Chaetodon aureus, French Angel

 

 

Pomacanthus paru is found in the western Atlantic from the Carolinas and Bermuda to southeastern Brazil, and in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean; also around Ascension Island. Usually found in shallow coral reefs at depths 5-25 m; often in pairs. The adults are mainly black, with golden edge scales; up to 40-60 cm in length; the juveniles have five vertical yellow bands over black body. French Angelfish feeds on sponges, gorgonians, tunicates, and algae; juveniles are cleaners.
