Pomacanthus paru is found in the western Atlantic from the Carolinas and Bermuda to southeastern Brazil, and in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean; also around Ascension Island. Usually found in shallow coral reefs at depths 5-25 m; often in pairs. The adults are mainly black, with golden edge scales; up to 40-60 cm in length; the juveniles have five vertical yellow bands over black body. French Angelfish feeds on sponges, gorgonians, tunicates, and algae; juveniles are cleaners.
